Ask your administrator if you think this is wrong. ====== Lake Humboldt ====== Lake Humboldt was a large, naturally occurring body of water that covered the Bogotá savanna during the Pleistocene ice age (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024). Evidence indicates a near continuous deposition in the basin since the Late Pliocene, with geologically rapid depositional cycles and significant water level fluctuations throughout the lake's history. The lake began retreating around 30,000 years BP, fed primarily by glacial melt from the [[18| Sumapaz Páramo]] to the south, with additional contributions from snow-capped peaks in the Eastern Hills of Bogotá (Wikipedia Contributors, 2025). During the Younger Dryas period, a time of sudden cooling in the Northern Hemisphere, the southwestern [[02| Altiplano Cundiboyacense]] in present-day central Colombia was covered by glacial Lake Humboldt. The lake was surrounded by snowy peaks and islands that today form the Eastern Hills, El Majuy, La Peña de Juaica, and the Suba Hills (History Fuzz, 2025). Present-day remnants of Lake Humboldt include the lakes of Fúquene, Herrera, and Suesca, as well as the numerous wetlands found throughout Bogotá.
